Freedom of Religious Belief and Practice
Religion in Aberdeen, South Dakota

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

Thus all citizens and people living in the United States are guaranteed freedom of religious belief and practice. Because of the First Amendment, a large number of faiths, spanning the country’s multicultural heritage, as well as those found within the country, have led the United States to become one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world.

The majority of Americans identify themselves as Christians (76%) while non-Christian religions (including Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and others) collectively make up about 4% of the adult population. Another 15% of the adult population is identified as having no religious affiliation.
